Day 4 - Holy Island
Today marked our final day on Holy Island, and what a wonderful way to end such a special week together. The children were all up bright and early, with bedrooms cleaned, bags packed, and bedding stripped by 8am. They showed fantastic responsibility and teamwork as they prepared for our journey home.
After breakfast, we enjoyed one last walk through the village to Jenny Bell’s Well beach. As we looked out across to St Cuthbert’s Island, the children learned that this small tidal island is believed to have been a place of quiet prayer and retreat for St Cuthbert, a 7th-century monk, bishop, and saint who devoted his life to spreading Christianity across Northumberland. Seeking peace away from the busy priory on Holy Island, St Cuthbert would spend time alone there in reflection and worship. Today, the island remains an important historical and spiritual landmark, helping us imagine what life may have been like over 1,300 years ago. We were also lucky enough to spot a couple of seals popping their heads out of the water to watch us, which made the moment even more special for the children.
We then visited the gift shop and the Lindisfarne Heritage Centre, where the children learned more about the rich history of Holy Island, including the story of the monks, Viking raids, and the famous Lindisfarne Gospels that helped make the island an important centre of Christianity over 1,300 years ago.
Before leaving, we returned to camp to say our goodbyes and heartfelt thank yous to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped make our stay so special.
The journey home was filled with excited chatter, laughter, and lots of reminiscing about the amazing experiences the children have shared throughout the week. It has been lovely to hear them reflecting on their adventures, friendships, and all they have discovered during their time on Holy Island.
Throughout the entire residential, Mrs Young, Miss Topliss, and Mrs Bailey were stopped on many occasions by members of the public complimenting the children on their manners, behaviour, kindness, and positive attitude. The children truly were a light throughout the week, shining with respect, care, and joy wherever they went. We are incredibly proud of every single one of them — they have been an absolute credit to themselves, their families, and our school.
